14mm Wheel Modification
From SavageWiki
Owners of older Savages have the option to install larger wheel hubs to help prevent wheel rim stripping. This article describes an alternative choice for modifying existing 14mm wheel hubs to perform in a similar manner. The modification can be used to prevent stripped wheel rims or as a repair to be used with rims already stripped of their internal plastic hex shape. The modification is reversible other than the wheel hubs will have permanent holes in them.

Procedure
Hub Preperation
- Center punch the exact center of the two flats parallel with the axle-pin slot.
- Drill a hole in each flat and tap for 6-32 screw.
- Cut the screws so they just protrude a tiny bit when screwed into the wheel hub. Don't forget the lockwasher during test fitting.
- Using the Dremel tool, grind the protruding edges of the screws until they are flush with the inside of the hub.
- Install two of the machine screws with washers and blue Loc-Tite.
- Repeat for the other three hubs.
Rim Preparation
- Refer to the figure below and grind away the webbing indicated in the red circle.
- Repeat for the webbing on the opposite side.
- Test fit a modified wheel hub and trim as necessary.
- Perform the same procedure for the other 3 wheels.
Final Assembly
- Add a small bit of epoxy into the wheel areas that were ground away.
- Insert modfied wheel hubs into the modified wheels. Make sure they are firmly pressed in.
- Add more epoxy into the surrounding webbing for additional strength.
- Once the epoxy has set up, but before it is fully cured, attach the wheels to the axles and tighten the wheel nuts to ensure the wheel hubs are firmly installed in the rims.
- Allow the epoxy to fully cure before use.
